Minamisoma city was extensively damaged in its coastal area by the Great East Japan Earthquake. Most of the citizens were forced to evacuate. In January 2012, the city issued the "Vision of Renewable Energy Promotion in Minamisoma city" to generate an amount of electric power that equates to or overwhelms the amount of energy consumed in the city through renewable energy in order to break away from the use of nuclear energy. The plan aims at the local production for the local consumption of energy, utilizing local resources.
While Minamisoma is applying photovoltaic power systems and storage batteries into residences and public buildings based on the vision, the city also promotes the installation of renewable power plants to reconstruct the coastal area damaged by the tsunami. A wind power plant on the Kashima coastal area and a large-scale solar power plant have been running since March 2018, and 4 more mega solar power plants are under construction in the coastal area damaged by the tsunami. The citizens, the enterprises, and the government will work together on the promotion of the vision from now on.
